What your first visit looks like
New to martial arts? Most people who walk through our door have never trained before. Here's how it goes, so there are no surprises.
- 01A real welcome. We'll greet you, show you around the dojo, and introduce you to your instructor.
- 02Watch or train, your call. Jump on the mat for a hands-on taste, or sit and observe a live class first. Both are completely fine.
- 03A quick chat about you. We'll talk through your goals, or your child's, and point you to the program that actually fits.
- 04Zero pressure. If it feels right, you can enroll on the spot. If not, no problem at all. You'll leave knowing more than when you came in either way.

A little about PMA
Practical Martial Arts has been part of the Marin community since 1993. We're family run by Mike and Karen Valentine, and we teach a blended style that pulls from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai kickboxing, boxing, wrestling, and real-world self-defense. Students start as young as four and train right through adulthood. What keeps families here for years is simple: real skill, genuine respect, and a room full of people who look out for each other.
- Since 1993
- Ages 4 to adult
- Corte Madera, serving all of Marin

Do I need any experience?
None at all. The intro is built for complete beginners, and most of our students started exactly where you are now.
Will I be pressured to sign up?
No. You'll have the option to enroll at the end if you love it, but there's never any pressure. We'd rather you join because it's right for you.
Can my child do the intro?
Absolutely. We start kids at age four in Little Dragons, and we have programs for every age through teens and adults.

Do I need any experience to start the adult program?
None at all. Most people walk in with zero background. Beginners are paired with patient training partners and coaches who break everything down step by step.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first session, comfortable athletic clothes are fine. For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu you'll eventually want a gi, but you can start without one, we'll point you in the right direction.
Is the adult program good for fitness, or just self-defense?
Both. Our classes deliver a serious full-body workout that builds strength, conditioning, and mobility while teaching you practical, real-world skills you'll actually retain.
How often should I train?
Two to three classes a week is a great starting rhythm. Our schedule is flexible, so you can build a routine that fits your life.
What ages are in the teen program?
Our teen classes serve ages 12–17, with beginner and intermediate/advanced groups so teens train with peers at a similar level.
My teen is shy and not very athletic. Will they fit in?
Absolutely. Our coaches specialize in meeting teens where they are. The structured, supportive environment is exactly where shy or less-athletic teens tend to flourish.
How does martial arts help with stress and confidence?
Training gives teens a healthy outlet and concrete tools to stay calm under pressure. Earning skills and progressing builds real, lasting confidence, on and off the mat.
What age can my child start martial arts at PMA?
Kids can begin at age four in Little Dragons. From age six to twelve, they train in our Beginner Kids program.
What martial arts do kids learn?
A blend of boxing, Muay Thai kicks, takedowns, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, along with practical self-defense, all taught at an age-appropriate level.
Is martial arts safe for young kids?
Yes. Safety is built into how we teach. Kids learn through controlled, supervised drills, and live sparring is only introduced much later, once they're ready.

That's exactly who this program is for. Every student starts as a beginner, and the curriculum is built to bring them along from day one.
